The Power of Outsourcing: How Professional Women Can Successfully Transition to Self-Employment

Outsourcing is the strategic use of outside resources to perform activities traditionally handled by internal staff and resources. It is a powerful tool that can help you focus on what’s necessary—your business’s core competencies. When you work for yourself, outsourced expertise becomes a part of your team to get things done.

Reasons for outsourcing

In planning to shift to self-employment as an expert in your field, there are several reasons to consider outsourcing work:

  • You are busy running the business and getting overwhelmed
  • You don’t have the expertise
  • You need the capacity
  • You don’t enjoy doing it, or
  • Somebody can do it cheaper elsewhere

In a traditional job or profession, specialist staff undertake the range of tasks you need to do on your own:

  • marketing
  • sales
  • administration
  • billing and accounts
  • IT and
  • everything else

When you transition to self-employment, you must juggle these multiple tasks and responsibilities while doing the work to bring in revenue. Staying focused and maintaining momentum can be overwhelming.

Outsourcing is a powerful solution to provide the services you need to do your job, especially for recurring and repetitive tasks.

The Benefits of Outsourcing

Outsourcing allows you to scale your business operations up or down, depending on your needs. By partnering with skilled professionals, you can quickly adapt to market or workload changes, ensuring your business remains agile and responsive.

Cost Reduction

Outsourcing non-core tasks can help you save money on overheads like office space, equipment, and employee benefits. By leveraging the expertise of external professionals, you can often access services at a lower cost than hiring full-time staff.

Focusing on Your Strengths

By outsourcing tasks that are not your forte, you can concentrate on what you do best – coaching, training, or consulting, significantly improving the quality of your work and your lifestyle and leading to greater client satisfaction and success.

By outsourcing non-core activities, you can focus on your passion—coaching, training, or consulting. This focus can lead to better client relationships, higher job satisfaction, and a more successful business.

Access to Top Talent

Outsourcing enables you to tap into a global pool of skilled professionals, ensuring you have the best team working on your projects. You can achieve better results in less time, providing a competitive edge.

Freelancer Platforms

There are various outsourcing options, especially with freelancer sites such as Freelancer, Upwork and Fiverr for small tasks/

Freelance sites can save you money if your budget is tight and you know what you are doing. Many excellent freelancers are available; the trick is being able to brief them properly to get what you want. The freelance sites will have client reviews, so read them carefully.

Briefing Freelancers and Costs

You need to think things through as logically as possible to create an accurate brief of what you want. I learned this the hard way with various freelancers I have employed. The other strange thing is the price you have to pay. Sometimes, I get brilliant work done at very reasonable prices, and other times, and I get overpriced and underwhelming work.

This is where you need to learn by experience and tread carefully. Rates vary per task, from as little as USD$10-50+ per hour. Be warned; you will get what you pay for. Go too cheap, or go for the lowest bidder; you may be throwing your money away.

The freelancers I tend to hire depending on the project my clients want me to work on and include:

    • Graphic designers for advertisements, illustrations, logos, ebooks
    • Website designers for various platforms, mostly WordPress, but I have used them for Wix, Squarespace and Weebly
    • Website technical support when things go bad
    • Specialist programmers for Gravity Forms layout
    • Sound engineers to fix up the poor sound on podcasts
    • Podcast editors
    • Video editors
    • Specialist copywriters, e.g. a horse vet for a horse site and a retired obstetrician to edit a specialist ebook
    • Editors and proofreaders
    • Social Media experts, especially for advertising
    • Virtual assistants for various requirements

Outsourcing is a powerful daily tool to help me complete my projects and free me up to do the work I enjoy, helping me to improve my skills and knowledge. By partnering with skilled professionals, you can focus on your strengths, reduce costs, and access top talent – all while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In my opinion, it is well worth the investment.
