A New Era of Longevity and Opportunity

We are not merely living longer; we are evolving—creating, mentoring, and leading beyond traditional retirement.

Professional women over 60, particularly those embracing solopreneurship, must reimagine relevance, sustain energy, and maintain visibility.

Wisepreneurs highlights five core areas, including Resilient Transitions & Support, which specifically helps professional women over 60 navigate career and life changes through cooperative systems, relational networks, and reflective practices.

Success in this area depends less on increased effort and more on thoughtfully utilising community, tools, and relationships.

Although Laurie Smale, featured in episode 70 of the Wisepreneurs Podcast, is not the typical Wisepreneurs profile, his experience offers valuable, gender-inclusive lessons.

His story provides practical insight for women—especially those over 60—on how community support and relational networks can powerfully shape both personal and professional reinvention.

Laurie’s narrative, supported by his coach Sue Ellson, highlights how effective reinvention often relies on communal rather than solitary efforts.

Embracing Your Third Act

Laurie’s journey exemplifies the relational essence of reinvention—an idea also echoed by previous guest Hazel Edwards OAM, a fellow Wisepreneur who continues to publish and mentor at 78.

Their independent stories reinforce a shared truth: thriving transitions are grounded in community, purpose, and the willingness to keep evolving.

One Introduction Changed Everything:

Laurie’s connection with Sue Ellson, facilitated by a mutual contact, ignited a new chapter. Sue, already in my network, then connected Laurie with the Wisepreneurs Podcast, bringing his story to light.

This highlights the significance of networks—not just who you know, but who knows you and is willing to advocate on your behalf.

“Connect with every single person you meet.” – Sue Ellson

In a long life, it’s often a single conversation that reshapes your path.

While Wisepreneurs is built with women in mind, we celebrate these cross-generational, cross-gender alliances.

Laurie’s transformation is shaped by mentorship, trust, and shared purpose—the very elements we champion.

These stories remind us that reinvention is relational: thriving isn’t a solo pursuit; it flourishes when courage meets community.

Laurie Smale’s Third Act: Reinventions Defying Expectations

Laurie’s story involves three pivotal shifts shaped by challenges and supported by meaningful relationships:

  1. From Junkyard to Grit: At 13, Laurie left school after a bullying experience with a maths teacher. In a junkyard, mentor Old Bill taught him critical thinking and resilience.
  2. From Fear of Education to University Graduate: At 37, Laurie conquered deep anxieties about academics, earning a BA (Hons) and GradDipEd. This education reshaped his identity, launching a career in coaching communication and confidence.
  3. From Tech-Averse to YouTube Mentor: At 78, Laurie embraced video creation, supported by Sue Ellson and a sound engineer. He created "Magic Minutes," short videos teaching confidence and communication.
Laurie emphasizes, “Fear is fear—whether you’re 78 or 18. If you’re scared, ask for help.”

Hazel Edwards and Purposeful Aging

Purposeful Aging

Hazel Edwards OAM, a previous guest on the Wisepreneurs Podcast, offers a parallel to Laurie’s path.

At 78, she continues to write, mentor, and support emerging writers, her hazelnuts, especially those in later life.

Her perspective deepens our understanding of purpose-driven aging and the quiet strength found in community.

As she notes, “They’ve got extraordinary stories—quiet heroes doing interesting things.”

Hazel’s and Laurie’s experiences, though independent, both underscore a vital truth: reinvention thrives in the presence of purpose, connection, and the courage to keep contributing.

Both Laurie and Hazel illustrate that community and clear purpose support significant life transitions.

Wisepreneurs Themes Illustrated

Laurie’s experience demonstrates two critical Wisepreneurs categories:

Resilient Transitions & Support: Laurie’s reinvention was significantly influenced by mentorship and relational capital, showcasing the importance of community-driven transitions.

Sue Ellson’s advice, “Connect with every person you meet,”

underscores how deliberate and active networking builds supportive environments essential for successful transitions and long-term growth.

AI-Augmented Work: Laurie’s journey illustrates how guidance and mentorship can ease the adoption of digital tools, transforming potential technological barriers into effective enablers.

This aligns with Wisepreneurs' emphasis on using AI and automation purposefully to enhance productivity, reduce cognitive load, and maintain relevance.

Sue highlights this philosophy succinctly: “I always look for technological solutions—it makes things manageable.”

Together, these skills enhance visibility, connectivity, and sustained purpose.

These skills increasingly underpin visibility, connection, and purpose.

Redefining Longevity: From Lifespan to Life Design

Traditional life stages—education, career, retirement—are increasingly obsolete.

Laurie’s resilience, strategic growth, and continuous learning exemplify the life-long adaptability emphasized in The 100-Year Life by Lynda Gratton and Andrew J. Scott.

Hazel summarizes this succinctly: “It’s the energy and health that keep people going.”

Laurie’s introduction to Sue Ellson sparked significant opportunities, highlighting the transformative power of meaningful connections.

Three Lessons from Laurie’s Reinvention

  1. Mentors Are Essential: Laurie’s progression illustrates mentorship’s value. He emphasizes, “Fear is fear. Ask for help.”
  2. Technology Enhances, Not Replaces: Laurie selectively mastered relevant tools, embracing help. Hazel adds, “Stay open to technology.”
  3. Purpose Sustains Engagement: Laurie underscores meaning over mere productivity, asserting, “Everyone has a story. Whatever it is, it matters.”
