This is my story and the essential lessons I learned along the way

Twenty years ago, I made a decision that changed my life. I quit my stable job as a vice-principal to start my own business, despite having a young family to support and still trying to figure out what I would do. What followed was a rollercoaster of lessons, growth, and gratitude.

Personal Story: Quitting a Stable Job to Start a Business

I was once a young primary school vice-principal, but the job was no longer fulfilling. I quit in a moment of boldness, not knowing my next steps. It was a risky move but one that led me down an entirely new path.

Early Struggles and Lack of Direction

My initial attempts at starting a business were a disaster, with challenges I needed help to face. I needed to figure out where to begin and chased trends and ideas without any real focus. Networking events became a desperate attempt to make sales, but I needed to figure out what I was selling.

Consultation with a Career Counsellor

Realising that I needed help, I sought guidance from a career counsellor. Together, we identified my passion for fitness and well-being, which, at the time, was an emerging market. I began to invest time and money into learning about this field, hoping to gain expertise.

The Importance of Research and Experience in the Chosen Field

I tried to get a grip on what business I was trying to compete in, but I quickly discovered that it was more than just logos, business cards, and memberships to sustain a business. Importantly, I needed to make some money out of it. I needed to dig deeper; this is where my journey began.

Initial Struggles and Lessons Learned

I realised the pitfalls of networking without direction and the danger of chasing trends. What I needed was guidance from someone who had been there before.

The Value of Finding a Mentor

At one of the networking events, I met a man who would become my mentor. He recognized my need for direction and focus and took me under his wing, teaching me the ropes of the business world. He helped me decide to focus on providing marketing services and getting the marketing done for clients.

The Turning Point: Finding a Mentor

Working with my mentor taught me how to identify a business need and find clients. He worked with me and the clients we attracted and provided marketing consulting while I handled the marketing implementation for our clients. Throughout 50 projects, my marketing and business know-how grew exponentially.

The Importance of Mentorship and Learning from Experience

My mentor's guidance and support were invaluable. He taught me the importance of a clear direction and the critical principles for starting a successful business. These lessons included understanding the problem a business solves for customers, identifying and developing a product or service, and marketing and selling your product effectively.

Investing in Yourself and Your Business

I learned that investing in yourself and your business is crucial for success. It meant I could still focus on my passion for fitness and well-being while developing a company that would attract the clients I wanted to work with. Some of them are in the medical field.

The Importance of Mentorship and Giving Back

Today, I am grateful for my mentor's guidance and committed to using my knowledge and experience to help others. And now, more than 20 years later, I aim to inspire others to survive, grow, and thrive in their businesses by sharing my story and insights. My newsletter and podcast are a part of this.

In retrospect, quitting my job and starting a business was foolish and courageous. But through mentorship and personal growth, I discovered the keys to success. My journey has shaped me as a professional and ignited a passion for helping others in their business endeavours. I hope to do the same for you.
