Why your mind is your practice, and the case for cognitive vitality after 50
Cognitive decline after 50 is common but it is not normal, and the evidence from neurology and longevity research says much of what we file under "getting older" answers to things we can influence.
For independent professionals whose work rests on how well their mind reads a situation, looking after cognitive vitality becomes the same job as looking after the practice.
I am seventy, and I have been reading the research on this alongside the conversations I keep having on the Wisepreneurs Podcast with people still working productively into their seventies and eighties. The picture is more encouraging than the quiet voice suggests. A good deal of what we file under getting older answers to things we can influence, and some of the proof is sitting in front of me in the guests I talk to. Here is what I have found, and why it changed how I think about my own working life.
Why cognitive decline is common but not normal as we age
I listened to the neurologist Majid Fotuhi explain this on Robert Lufkin's health podcast, around the release of his book The Invincible Brain. Fotuhi has spent more than thirty years on memory and ageing at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Cognitive decline, he says, is common but not normal. It was once common for people to smoke on aeroplanes, and it was never normal.
His framing is that the brain is an organ like any other. Its cells need blood flow, oxygen and nutrients, and they suffer when those run short. When people reach their sixties carrying poor sleep, untreated blood pressure, too many medications or a diet that spikes their blood sugar, the brain pays for it, and the forgetfulness that follows gets misread as the first step toward dementia.
Fotuhi is honest that some slowing is real. His own daughters beat him at fast card games, and he does not pretend a brain at sixty matches one at twenty. The wear he sees in the evidence, though, is a few per cent, not the wholesale collapse people dread. The real risk is the story we tell ourselves on the way there. Believe you must slow down, do less, and the doing less speeds up the very decline you feared.
There is a deeper reason so much of this is common without being normal. A good deal of modern working life is evolutionarily novel. We were shaped over a very long time to move through the day, to sleep when it is dark, to eat food that does not come in a packet, and to solve real problems in the company of others.
A day of sitting at a screen, grazing on sugar, carrying low-grade stress and working alone runs against most of that. The mismatch between the life our biology expects and the one we actually live is a recurring theme in the evolutionary health writing, and it gives Fotuhi's distinction its force. These are common features of modern life, and our biology never came to expect them.
That is where this becomes a Wisepreneurs question rather than only a health one. The belief itself does work in the body. To see why, it helps to be clear about where thinking actually happens.
Why your thinking reaches past your skull (the extended mind)
Everything here rests on a single idea from cognitive science: understanding does not happen only inside your head. It emerges from a system that takes in your brain, your body, your tools, the spaces you work in and the people you think alongside.
The philosophers Andy Clark and David Chalmers put the question plainly decades ago, where does the mind stop and the rest of the world begin, and their answer was that it carries on past the skull. The writer Annie Murphy Paul gathered the evidence in her book The Extended Mind, showing how our bodies, our surroundings and our relationships each carry part of the cognitive load.

Karl Fast, whose research is an important influence on how I think about Wisepreneurs, calls the gap this creates the cost of understanding. Information is cheap and everywhere. Turning it into genuine understanding is expensive, and the cost depends on what you already know and on the quality of the tools and interactions you can bring to bear.
The associative networks, tested frameworks and discernment you build over a career are the kind of intelligence that grows rather than fades with age, what researchers call crystallised intelligence. They are also exactly what lets you read a situation and see what matters.
So when thinking is spread across brain, body and environment, looking after the body and the conditions you think in becomes the same job as looking after the thinking. That reframing leads straight to the evidence on belief.

How your beliefs about ageing shape your health and longevity
The Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer has spent her career here, and I listened to her lay it out in a long conversation with Andrew Huberman. Her best-known study, from 1979, took a group of elderly men to a retreat fitted out to look like twenty years earlier and had them live for a week as though they were their younger selves, talking about the events of that time as current. By the end their vision, hearing, memory and strength had measurably improved, and outside observers judged that they looked younger.
In a later study her team taught a group of hotel chambermaids to see their daily work as exercise. Their diet, hours and effort stayed the same. The group that changed their mind about what they were doing lost weight and lowered their blood pressure. Langer's way of putting it is that mind and body work as a single thing, so wherever you put your mind you also put your body. Some of her bolder claims are contested, and I hold those lightly, but the studies themselves are real and the direction is consistent.
Becca Levy at Yale turned the idea into hard numbers. In work drawn together in her book Breaking the Age Code, people with more positive beliefs about their own ageing, measured years before any decline, went on to live about seven and a half years longer than those with negative beliefs. Among older people carrying the high-risk APOE4 gene, those with positive age beliefs were close to half as likely to develop dementia.
The pattern keeps appearing. The longevity writer Maddy Dychtwald points to research on age identity, the age you feel rather than the age on your documents, where a younger felt age tracked with more grey matter on brain scans. And Natasha Ginnivan, an ageing researcher I interviewed for the Wisepreneurs Podcast, studies how attitudes to ageing sit below conscious awareness and shape how we actually age.
Most of us, she points out, are working with automatic stereotypes we never chose and rarely examine. One of her quieter findings is that social connection ranks among the strongest predictors of a long life, ahead of most items on the usual health checklist.
For an older professional the implication is direct. Keep building, keep choosing, hold a younger sense of your own age, and you set conditions your body then follows. Autonomy, the thing this whole platform is built around, doubles as a health intervention.
Five pillars of brain health, read as professional infrastructure
Fotuhi reduces the practical side to five things: move your body, sleep well, eat in a way that does not spike your blood sugar, manage your stress, and keep learning something genuinely new. None of it is news. The frame is what changes.
For a wisepreneur these five are the maintenance of the system that produces the work, because the discernment clients pay for runs on blood flow, neurotransmitters and metabolic steadiness, and those answer to how you live this week.
Krisna Hanks understands this in her body. A former professional dancer I first spoke with on episode 13 of the podcast, she now works on movement and metabolic health, and she said something that could have come from Fotuhi, though she credits the physician Georgie Ede for it: you cannot separate the brain from the body, they work together, so good metabolic health in the body means good metabolic health for the brain. Her warning to people our age was plain. Do not accept that ageing automatically means becoming ill. She treats back-to-back hours at a desk as a real risk, and small movement breaks every hour, changing posture, standing, a few minutes of activity, as a way of keeping the body from assuming you have gone to sleep.There is a specific place in the brain where this plays out. The hippocampus, which handles memory, is also one of the few areas that keeps growing new neurons through life, and exercise is among the strongest drivers of that growth.
The neuroscientist Lynn Nadel describes it as the part of us that knits experiences together across time and place, so the right piece of the past surfaces at the right moment. That knitting-together is the plain mechanism beneath the discernment a client pays for, and in Nadel's account memory and movement run on the same machinery, which gives the case for staying active a deeper grounding than blood flow alone.

Read that way, each pillar is doing a specific job for the work itself. Fotuhi adds a point that runs against the grain of busy work: boredom matters, because new ideas tend to arrive when the mind is left to wander rather than filled.
The forest therapy guide Mayumi Kataoka described this on episode 78 as the slow, unhurried noticing that lets the mind range before you go looking for anything.
It is worth being clear about what learning something new actually involves, because the how matters as much as the what. Karl Fast's work makes the point that we do not build understanding by sitting still and taking information in. We build it by interacting with it: hunting down what we need, adjusting it, getting it out of our heads and onto paper or a screen, and assembling it into something new.
He calls these epistemic actions, the small moves that make thinking easier than doing it all in your head, and curiosity is what sets them going. This is why active, effortful learning keeps the brain working in a way that passive scrolling never will, and why Michael Best teaching himself a new field at eighty did more for his mind than any number of documentaries could.

What it looks like to keep working into your seventies and eighties
The evidence that convinces me most sits in the people I talk to. The author Hazel Edwards, who at seventy-eight still writes across several fields and helps others on the edge of retirement craft their memoirs, put it simply when I raised age with her. She does not think age matters all that much. What matters is the energy and the health, and having something you are genuinely interested in. The ones who go on, she said, are the ones with something they still want to do. Authors, in her experience, do not really retire. They keep going, perhaps at a slightly slower pace and in new fields.
Michael Best makes the same case in a different key. A GP who retired from daily practice at seventy, he sat down at eighty to write a careful, scientifically grounded book on medical cannabis and the endocannabinoid system, teaching himself the territory online as he went. Learning something genuinely new, the hardest of Fotuhi's pillars to keep up, is exactly what he took on in his ninth decade, and he came to it with appetite. He also did it by leaning on digital tools to read, gather and make sense of the research, which is the extended mind from the earlier section in plain practice: one experienced mind reaching out into the tools around it to do more than it could alone.
Jon Younger, who studies the shift to independent and freelance work and first came on the podcast in episode 12, said it most bluntly. At seventy-three, in his words, you are not dead yet. The real question is how to find something you are good at and enjoy, and to make room for it without crowding out the rest of your life. All three have kept the engine running, and the engine, it turns out, is most of the protection.
Continuing well does take some adjusting. Michal Novotny, a physiotherapist who has worked with elite athletes and film actors, made the point that the body and the mind keep changing, and the mistake he sees even in elite performers is holding the same intensity and the same routine year after year while recovery quietly slows. Working well into later life means adapting how you work, allowing that recovery takes longer than it once did, and treating the body and mind as one connected system rather than a set of separate parts.
How challenging work keeps your mind sharp into later life
Martin Hyde, professor of work and employment at the University of Leicester, has spent two decades studying ageing, work and retirement, and his research turns the whole question around. The age at which we expect people to retire, he points out, is a relatively modern social construct rather than a biological deadline. What matters, he argues, is how well someone can do the work, and chronological age turns out to be a poor guide to that. Functional health becomes more varied as people get older, not uniformly worse, which is why later life is one of the most diverse stretches of the whole lifespan.
The finding that matters most here is one Hyde published with Swedish colleagues, drawing on data that follows people for decades. Those who had held cognitively complex, challenging work across their lives showed higher levels of cognitive function in their seventies and eighties. The work itself, the kind that keeps handing you new ways of thinking, helped protect the mind that did it. That is the case for cognitive vitality stated as a circle. Looking after your mind keeps the option of meaningful work open, and meaningful, demanding work keeps your mind in good repair.

Hyde is careful about the conditions. Ageing, he notes, is heavily shaped by the environments we live and work in, which is why the recent slowing of healthy life expectancy in countries like the United Kingdom tracks the cost-of-living squeeze rather than any change in our biology. For an independent professional the lesson is pointed. You hold more control over those conditions than an employee does. You can choose work that stretches you, set a pace that protects your recovery, and build your days around the habits that keep the whole system sound.
Why purpose and autonomy protect the ageing brain
The softest of Fotuhi's themes turns out to be one of the strongest. People with a clear sense of purpose, he says, drawing on a large body of research, sleep better, carry less stress, and show markedly lower rates of stroke and heart disease, and they tend to live longer. He treats purpose almost as a free intervention, one that asks nothing of your diet or your gym membership, only that you know what you are for.
Independent professionals have an advantage here that employees rarely get. Building a practice on your own terms, around work that means something to you, is a form of purpose renewed every week by the choosing. The work is not always a joy. Still, having a reason to keep going, and the autonomy to shape how, does more for your brain than most of the supplements people ask me about. It is the quiet thread running through Hazel, Michael and Jon. The work still matters to them, so they are still in it.
What cognitive vitality means for building an independent practice
Put the pieces together and a single argument emerges. The capability you sell, the ability to read a situation and see what actually matters, is the one thing the current wave of technology is steadily getting closer to imitating. What protects it is staying engaged with the hardest parts of your work and keeping the whole system that produces it in good order: the body that carries your thinking, the spaces you think in, the beliefs you hold about your own ageing, and the purpose that gets you to the desk.
The self-directed professional has a real edge in this. You control your schedule, so you can build in the movement, the sleep, the slow thinking and the new learning that an employee has to fight a calendar for. The harder part is that few of us see our own positioning clearly, or do the deep thinking about our practice alone. Almost every professional I have interviewed has had help with their thinking: a coach, a mentor, a partner who asks the questions you cannot ask yourself when you are too close to your own expertise. Looking after your mind and getting a second mind on your practice come from the same instinct, turned inward and outward.

I am seventy, building rather than winding down, partly by temperament and partly because the research, and the people I keep meeting, gave me permission to. The number on my birth certificate has turned out to be a weaker predictor than I assumed. What I do with my days, how I move, what I keep learning, and quietly, what I believe about all of it, carries far more weight. That is a more demanding story than simply getting old, and a much more hopeful one.
